Sayee is the idea that you should walk around the hills of Safah and Marah seven times. It is a part of both the Umrah and the Hajj pilgrimages. The region for Sayee.
Sayee has to be done between the two hills of Safa and Marwah, which are inside the Masjid-al-Haram. Sayee usually has to be done on the ground level. But if it’s busy and you don’t have enough space on the ground floor, you can perform Sayee in the middle floor or on the roof.
In the same way, if you are doing Sayee on a hot summer day, you should do it in the middle. At other times of the day, you should do it on the roof.
Distance between Safah and Marwah.
From Safah to Marwah, which is one lap of Sayee, there are about 450 metres. So, if you do seven laps, the total distance you need to go is about 3.15 kilometres, or 1.96 miles.
Pilgrims must walk the whole distance. If any part is missed, Sayee and umrah/hajj would not be complete. Because of this, it’s important to get ready for such a long trip ahead of time. If you need to, you can take a break and get some rest before you start the Sayee ritual.
Prefer completing Sayee on foot.
The whole distance between Safah and Marah should be covered on foot. But if someone needs a ride because of health problems, old age, or special needs, he or she can do Sayee riding. You can’t say you did it because you were tired.
Continuity is not an obligation.
Sayee doesn’t have to keep things going all the time. So, it’s okay for a pilgrim to stop Sayee for a while and rest, eat or drink something, do Wudhu again, or prepare for the Fardh Salah. But the Sayee can only be used again from the exact spot where it was stopped.
Wudhu/Ghusl requirement.
It’s best, but not necessary, for Sayee to have done wudhu. In fact, Sayee would still be valid if a pilgrim did it while he or she was in a state of minor or major ritual impurity, which would require Ghusl.
Ambiguity in the Number of laps.

During the holy ritual.
- You can talk during Sayee, but you shouldn’t talk about things that aren’t important.
Even if you are praying, you shouldn’t raise your voice during Sayee because it can make other people’s prayers hard to hear. There is no Sayee during a Nafal tawaf or after Tawaf-al-Wida (farewell tawaf).
