Stress is a natural response to the challenges of life. It’s when our body’s stress response system kicks in, causing us to tense up or even get sick. The goal of this article isn’t to tell you how much stress you can handle—we don’t know that answer for sure! Instead, it will help explain what stress is and why it occurs in your body when faced with a stressful situation.
Stress occurs when there are perceived threats (like being late for work) or real threats (like an accident). The body responds by increasing blood flow and releasing hormones like adrenaline and cortisol which make us feel alert, nervous or angry. In short: your heart races; muscles tense up; breathing speeds up; digestion slows down; memory gets worse; moods change quickly—and so does our ability to think clearly about things going on around us!
A certain amount of stress can be good for you.
Stress can be good for you, but only in small doses. A certain amount of stress is helpful for your body and mind to adapt and grow. It helps you develop resilience, which is the ability to bounce back from adversity. If you are exposed to too much stress over a period of time, then it will become unnecessary and counterproductive for you—and this is where things start getting really bad!
